Well, that was a rush! What a busy end to July.  If you felt like it was busier on our services than usual, you wouldn't be wrong. We have been so busy taking bookings, offering assistance and information, setting itineraries and generally keeping up our exceptional customer service (even if I do say so myself hehe). Our awesome drivers have excelled this month and did not miss a beat.  The passengers really do have such nice things to say about all of them, and rightly so!  We are looking at you Rod and Kim, Shane and Karin, Paul and Jason, Marlene and Ra!

South Hedland PUMA

Please note there is a change to our timetable.  We are no longer going to the South Hedland Caltex. We now arrive and depart at either the South Hedland Puma or from the KMart entrace of the South Hedland Shopping Centre. The Puma is located at Lot 401, Great Northern Highway. It has facilities and inside seating while you wait. We understand getting a taxi in Hedland is difficult at times. It might be best to prebook.

Shark Bay and Monkey Mia

Tourist season or not, there are few places that remain a popular destination all year round. Monkey Mia and the Shark Bay area definitely fits the bill here.

There is no definitive answer when it comes to how Monkey Mia got its name, but here is a couple of suggestions; Mia meaning the Aboriginal term for home or shelter and Monkey is allegedly derived from a pearling boat called "Monkey" that anchored at the now, Monkey Mia in the late 19th century. Interestingly, research also stated that the most likely origin of the name, is that it was included in a list of Aboriginal names and their meanings supplied by the Geraldton Police Station in around 1899! The meaning of the name is given as "Salt, or bad water", or after the pet monkeys owned by early Malay pearlers who camped at the location.

However the name come about, it is one very popular tourist destination attracting roughly 100,000 visitors per year. While not specifically for the wild dolphin experience, they are certainly a draw card as it is one a few locations where you can see and get close to wild dolphins with the possibility of feeding one. It is also the location for extensive behavioural and biological research on bottlenose dolphins by marine biologists, who have had a research project there, since 1982.

Visitors to the area can learn a lot about these loveable creatures at the Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery & Visitor Centre , which provides information not only about the dolphins, but other features of the surrounding Shark Bay Marine Park in the interpretation display, or from the movie playing in the air-conditioned theatrette.

Wula Gura Eco Cultural Adventures Logo

Something I would love to do one day, is learn about the traditional culture from local indigenous guides at Wula Guda Nyinda Adventure Tours, who offer unique cultural experiences.  Wula Gura Nyinda conduct a range of non-strenuous ‘on Country’ tours based in this spectacular location, exploring the ancient cultural ties of the region’s first people, (Nhanda and Malgana Aboriginal People), to the place they call ‘Gutharraguda’. Visitors can also walk the Wulyibidi Yaninyina trail to further explore the area.

Shark Bay Quad Bike Tours

There are so many attractions available in this area ranging from:

·         Dirk Hartog Island
·         Fishing
·         Kayaking
·         Quad Bikes
·         Scenic Flights
·         Snorkelling and Diving
·         Wildlife and Sunset Cruises
·         Whale watching
·         Kite Surfing
·         Camel Rides

So if you’re feeling fit, grab your paddle and go for a kayak or pick up the snorkeling gear and dive into the great unknown to look at the magnificent ocean life beneath the waves. For those lazier days when your feet just won’t do the walking, book a cruise and watch the sunset, put on your helmet and quad bike your way along the dunes or grab some line and tackle, pick a spot (outside of sanctuary areas) and cast a line.
