Geraldton – the Only City on Australia’s Coral Coast

Geraldton, a functioning port town, is also the only city on Australia’s coral coast. The ideal place to go from the beach to a cafe, watersports to arts and culture, history to natural wonders, a coastal city with variety.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

Take a few minutes to consider your interests and then take your pick of the things you’d like to see and do:

Water Sports & Beaches – Yes it’s windy in Geraldton, so it’s the ideal place for kite surfing and wind surfing. The waters and wind also suit wakeboarding, kneeboarding, jet skiing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and more. Ultimate Water Sports on the Geraldton Foreshore have a range of equipment for hire so can choose to try the activity that suits you. For a relaxing day, head to the beach for a swim and then drop into one the cafes for a bite to eat.

Abrolhos Islands – although 60km off the coast, the islands are known for the tragic Batavia Story which included mutiny and massacre, are also a haven for bird and marine life. There are a variety of flight tours to choose from, take your pick from a flyover, a half day or full day tour, add some snorkelling at the islands or combine the Abrolhos Islands with a Pink Lake Flyover. Alternatively, take the “Shipwreck Special” flight if history is your area of interest. Fishing charters around the islands are also available. On the last Sunday of each month the Batavia Longboat Replica sails in from the Museum of Geraldton (weather permitting), you can sail for free (though donations are welcome).

Historical SitesThe HMAS Sydney II Memorial is dedicated to the 645 sailors who lost their lives when the ship sunk off the coast in 1941, the memorial is a must see and the sunset views are wonderful. Volunteers are available if you wish to do a guided tour. The Birdwood House Military Museum holds more details.

The Bill Sewell Complex includes the Old Victoria District Hospital Building and the Old Goal, wander around yourself or join a tour run by volunteers. St Francis Xavier Cathedral is a spectacular Church in the centre of Geraldton and is worth a look both inside and out. While in the area wander into the “Western Australian Museum – Geraldton”, it is the largest regional museum in the state. Further along is the old Town Hall (now the home of the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery), which is a Heritage Listed Building. A little further away, is the Point Moore Lighthouse, the oldest surviving Commonwealth lighthouse in Western Australia and is still in operation today.

Arts & Culture – If arts is more your thing then pop into the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery which houses the City of Greater Geraldton’s Art Collection. (They also offer free wifi access). There is also the Yamajiart Centre which is an emerging aboriginal art centre which has a gallery and sales shop.

WHERE TO STAY

Geraldton Backpackers on the Foreshore is located close to the beach and cafes and many of the places listed above are within walking distance. It is housed in a heritage listed building and has various room types available from single to shared. An ideal location to stay while in Geraldton.

HOW TO GET AROUND IN GERALDTON

Buswest operate the TransGeraldton bus service, they have 3 different routes around the city which makes getting around cheap and easy.

HOW TO GET THERE AND BACK

Express tickets can be purchased for those that wish to do point to point travel ie: direct from one destination to another and Hop on Hop off passes as ideal for travellers who wish to stop here as one of many destinations or for workers who wish to bus in and bus out between home and their workplace.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON AN INTEGRITY COACH LINES JOURNEY

  1. Short comfort stops approx. every three hours. This allows you to stretch your legs, use facilities at the roadhouses (there is also a toilet on the coach) and purchase food and drinks if you wish. You may also wish to bring dry snacks or meals that do not have distinctive odours such as eggs or tuna onto the coach. And, of course, your water bottle is most welcome.
  2. Capture glimpses of various towns along the way if you are using an Express ticket (point to point ticket). If you are using a Hop on Hop off pass then you may wish to stop and enjoy other towns for a couple of days rather than just pass through. The choice is yours!
  3. Friendly, Personable and Knowledgeable Drivers. Drivers are knowledgeable on all locations and can provide tips and hints as needed. Two professional drivers per trip ensures they are well rested to get you to your destination safely. Best of all, they are a friendly crew that are very approachable.
