G'Day!

What did the sun say when it reappeared after an eclipse?
Pleased to heat you again.

Next month, on the 20th April 2023, the North West of Western Australia will be extremely busy with people coming to see the solar eclipse. The main locations being Exmouth, Coral Bay and Onslow.  In Exmouth it's a 100% total solar eclipse.  Coral Bay and Onslow have a 99% solar eclipse.  However, if you are happy to see a partial eclipse, then Carnarvon, Denham, Monkey Mia, Karratha, Hedland & Tom Price have over a 90% solar eclipse. Broome, Newman, Kalbarri and Geraldton will have over an 80% solar eclipse.  Our services will be running according to our normal timetable during this time so you may like to check out the map to find a vantage point and destination where you can still get accommodation.

Make sure you view the eclipse safely to avoid damage to your eyes. A google search will give you lots of options but do ensure you are buying genuine articles for viewing. Given the volume of people attending the main areas, it is advisable to bring essential items with you.

However, if you'd rather avoid the crowds then you may wish to plan your own adventure that avoids the Ningaloo area on that date.

This month we have some information about Broome for you.

2023 Solar Eclipse

Broome

Culture, culture, culture -Indigenous, Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian and Filipino.

History, history, history – dinosaurs, Indigenous, pearling, cable laying and WWII.

Nature, nature, nature - beaches, staircase to the moon, horizontal falls, whale watching and crocodiles.

Tours, tours, tours – Indigenous tours, town tours, pearl tours, scenic boat tours and camel rides.

Events, events, events –Shinju Matsuri, Broome Courthouse Markets and the Broome Pride Mardi Gras.

S, let’s slip into Broome Time, why not start right now, just relax, have a read and consider what you might like to see and do on a trip to Broome:

Broome is Yawuru country and can be experienced through taking part in one of the Indigenous tours, where you can learn about Aboriginal history, bush tucker, the stolen generation and the pearling history.  You may also wish to visit the art galleries where Aboriginal artists display their work.

Then there is the pearling industry which attracted pearl divers from China, Japan, Malaysia and the Philippines, hence the reason Broome is so multicultural today.  Shinju Matsuri is the Festival of the Pearl, this is a multiday event.  If you are thinking of attending then obtain a programme first so you can decide which days suit your interests so you make the most of the experience.

Broome also has 120 million-year-old dinosaur footprints that can be viewed in several locations around the area and there’s a display about the dinosaurs at the Broome Historical Museum.  While we are talking about tough old creatures, there’s the Malcolm Douglas Broome Crocodile Park.  Just keep in mind, the lyrics from the song “Never smile at a crocodile……”

You can learn about the history of WWII at the Broome Historical Museum or you may like to take a boat ride to the Dutch wrecks that sit a kilometre offshore.  The wrecks are heritage listed but can be viewed at low tide.  You can walk across the mud flats at low tide to view them (but who’s still thinking "Never smile at a Crocodile"? Yes, ok, so looks like you'll all be on the boat).

The beaches are wonderful, we’ve all heard of Cable Beach, however there is also Town Beach that is worth a look.  The camel ride has become an iconic symbol of Broome.  Whether you ride the camel or just pop down for a look, the sunset as the backdrop behind the camels makes for a truly relaxing start to an evening.  At certain times of the year, you can view the “Staircase to the Moon”.

When to visit Broome?  That depends on what you’re planning to see and do, most people go in the dry season, however the wet season is unique so needs to be considered.   Or if you can’t decide, then why not plan two holidays!  😊

Oh, it’s so easy to become so busy seeing and doing all these things, you must remember to have some time for relaxing at the pool or out at the beach or to just stroll through China Town.
